Theme: Great people and amazing deeds (p.183)

  1. Gesture (n.): something that you do to show your feeling or intention

    e.g.
    Confronted (面對) by the frenzied (瘋狂的) knife-wielding (持刀的) man, the senior inspector (高級督察) dropped her gun and put her hands up, approaching him in a harmless gesture (姿態).

  2. Extraordinary (adj.): very unusual

    e.g.
    The video editor (影片剪接師) adopted (採取) an extraordinary (非比尋常的) scene change (場景轉換) to reveal (展現) the principle (原理) of the butterfly effect (蝴蝶效應).

  3. Ignore (v.): to pay no attention to something

    e.g.
    Forensic experts (法證專家) cannot ignore (忽視) any details of a crime scene (犯罪現場) because they could be the key to solving the case (案件).

  4. Take advantage of (phr. v.): to treat someone unfairly in order to get something good from them

    e.g.
    Tracy is too kind and considerate (為人設想). Her friends are always taking advantage of (佔便宜) her good (善良) nature (本性) by asking her to run errands (跑腿).

  5. Deserve (v.): to have earned something because of the way you have behaved

    e.g.
    The two scientists (科學家) deserve (應得) the Nobel Prize in Medicine (諾貝爾醫學獎) for their discovery of the temperature and touch receptors (感受器) in humans. They have made a great contribution (貢獻) in the field of medicine.

  6. Worth (adj.): to be important or useful to have or do

    e.g.
    The protesters (抗議者) thought that the campaign (運動) was worth (值得的) doing because it would make the government pay more attention to racial (種族的) inequality (不平等).

  7. Rightful (adj.): legally or morally correct

    e.g.
    The lawsuit (訴訟), which lasted nearly two years, finally came to an end when the court (法庭) awarded (裁定) the property (財產) to its rightful (正當的) owner.

  8. Champion (n.): someone who has won the first prize in a competition

    e.g.
    At the French Open (法國網球公開賽), the newbie (新手) beat all the other experienced (經驗豐富的) players and became the champion (冠軍) with her exceptionally (異常地) good basic skills (基本功).

  9. Perspective (n.): a particular way of thinking about something

    e.g.
    One of the most important jobs of philosophers (哲學家) is to put forward (提出) new perspectives (觀點) to look at our habits, which most people never reflect (反思) on.

  10. Integrity (n.): the quality of being honest

    e.g.
    Our principal is a man of integrity (正直). He always follows high standards of morals (道德).

  11. Stamina (n.): the physical or mental strength to do something for a long time

    e.g.
    The athletes used their stamina (耐力) to complete the tough (艱苦的) adventure race (越野賽), which included cross-country running (越野跑), mountain biking (越野單車) and paddling (划船).

  12. Discipline (n.): the ability to control yourself

    e.g.
    Although the actor is prone to (易於) obesity (肥胖), he now has eight-pack (八塊) abs (腹肌) owing to (因為) his discipline (自律) and persistence (堅持).
