Unit 10

Theme: Customs of different places (p.113)

  1. Etiquette (n.): the set of rules or customs in particular social groups or social situations

    e.g.
When having a meal in Hong Kong, there are a few etiquette (禮節) rules worth mentioning. For example, when people pour tea, it is customary (慣常的) to tap (輕敲) on the table to express gratitude (感謝).

  2. Expect (v.): to think that someone should do a particular thing

    e.g.
The cutlery (餐具) is expected (需要) to be placed in the appropriate position when dining in a western restaurant because this can convey (傳遞) to the waiter whether you intend to continue the meal.

  3. Occasion (n.): a special or formal event

    e.g.
We should not talk loudly when dining on formal occasions (場合) as this is ill-mannered (無禮的).

  4. Apologise (v.): to say that you are sorry for doing something wrong or causing a problem

    e.g.
In order to apologise (道歉) professionally at work, you should acknowledge (認可…屬實) what happened, state what you did wrong and take steps to correct the situations.
