Theme: The world of sports (p.87)

  1. Team building (n.): the process of getting a group of people to work together well and communicate effectively

    e.g.
    The manager (經理人) of that football team thinks it is essential (十分重要的) to keep the members together so he pays for a team building (團隊建設) event every month.

  2. Pastime (n.): an activity that is done for enjoyment

    e.g.
    Some people think playing badminton is a good pastime (消遣) because the sport is moderate (適中) in intensity (強度) and suitable (適合的) for people of different ages.

  3. Endurance (n.): the ability to keep doing something difficult for a long time

    e.g.
    Marathon (馬拉松) is an endurance (耐力) sport that tests the participants’ physical fitness (體能) and willpower (意志).

  4. Flexibility (n.): the ability to change or be changed easily according to the situation

    e.g.
    With so many uncertainties (不確定性) in surfing (衝浪), surfers (衝浪者) often need solid (紮實的) fundamentals (基本功) and a high degree of flexibility (靈活度).

  5. Synchronise (v.): to cause to happen at the same time

    e.g.
    To allow the audience to clearly capture (捕捉) every moment of the basketball game, the court (籃球場) installed a large screen. The images on the screen are synchronised (使同步) with the live (現場的) game.

  6. Paddling (n.): moving a boat through water using a paddle

    e.g.
    If they want to stop their kayak (獨木舟) from spinning (打轉) and even speed it up (加速) to move ahead, the paddling (划動) speed among members must be the same.

  7. Inclusion (n.): the idea that everyone should enjoy the same experiences

    e.g.
    The encouragement and affirmation (肯定) from the seniors greatly increased the confidence of the new players. The inclusion (包容) becomes the motivation (動力) for the new ones.

  8. Coordination (n.): the act of making all the people in the same group work together in an organized way

    e.g.
    Scoring (得分) in curling (冰壺) depends largely on the coordination (配合) between the thrower and those who hold the brush.
