Theme: Crime (p.74)

  1. Vow (v.): to make a formal and serious promise

    e.g.
    The robber (劫匪) repented (悔過) in prison (監獄) and vowed (立誓) not to commit crimes (犯罪) after he was released (釋放).

  2. Youth (n.): young people

    e.g.
    The panicked boy was retreating (後退) under a hail of cans thrown by a gang of youths (童黨).

  3. Violence (n.): actions or words that are intended to hurt people

    e.g.
    The violence (暴行) of criminals (罪犯) is getting severe (極為惡劣的). It is a great shock that they even kidnap (綁架) children and sell their blood for making a large sum of (巨額) money.

  4. Juvenile (adj.): relating to young people who are not yet adults

    e.g.
    Families, schools and community (社區) should have the common (共同的) responsibility for protecting teenagers, preventing juvenile (青少年的) crimes from happening and making efforts (努力) to help them grow healthily.

  5. Night-time (n.): the period of time when it is dark

    e.g.
    According to the report, the incidence (發生率) of night-time (夜間) car accidents is on the rise (上升).

  6. Counter (v.): to do something to reduce or prevent the bad effects of something

    e.g.
    The college plans to invite a psychological (心理學的) expert to give a lecture in order to counter (減輕) the psychological traumas (創傷) of students after the campus shooting (槍殺).

  7. Counselling (n.): advice given by a professional

    e.g.
    The man who suffers from mental disorders (精神病) once had the idea of killing people. His parents think that he needs some extra counselling (輔導) and treatment (治療).
