Theme: Occupations, careers and prospects (p.71)

  1. Career-oriented education (n.): education that allows students to focus on a particular career field

    e.g.
    Many college students think career-oriented education (職業生涯教育) is essential (十分重要的) as it helps them find out whether their strengths (長處) match the careers (職業) they are interested in.

  2. Vocational training (n.): training that prepares people to work

    e.g.
    In order to make good use of theoretical (理論的) knowledge, university students are encouraged to attend (參加) vocational training (職業培訓) courses.

  3. Engineer (n.): a person whose job is to design or build machines, roads, railways, etc., using scientific principles

    e.g.
    The teenager hopes to become an engineer (工程師) after graduation to improve the infrastructure (基礎設施) of third-world countries.

  4. White-collar (adj.): relating to people who work in offices

    e.g.
    White-collar (白領的) jobs are in high demand (需求) due to satisfactory (令人滿意的) work environment and salary, which reflects (反映) young people’s pursuit of high quality of life.

  5. Accountant (n.): a person whose job is to keep or examine the records of money received, paid etc.

    e.g.
    Even seasoned (經驗豐富的) accountants (會計師) are starting to worry that artificial intelligence (人工智能) will take their place (取代) in the near future.

  6. Blue-collar (adj.): connected with people who do physical work in industry

    e.g.
    Some people think blue-collar (藍領) workers are the backbone (中堅力量) of the production process. They have certain technical (技術的) skills and are able to contribute (貢獻) to society.

  7. Electrician (n.): a person who puts in, checks, and repairs electrical wires and electrical equipment

    e.g.
    The job of electricians (電工) has suffered a high employee turnover (員工流失) rate because it requires professionals (專業人士) with knowledge and skills related to electrical appliances (電器) but often pays poorly.

  8. Plumber (n.): a person whose job is to connect and repair water pipes, baths, toilets, etc

    e.g.
    Some think that being a plumber (水管工人) is a good way to earn a living (謀生) for people with less education because water pipes (水管) need to be installed (安裝) and repaired in most homes.

  9. Manual (adj.): involving physical work rather than mental work

    e.g.
    We should not underestimate (低估) people who do manual (體力的) work for a living (謀生). They have many difficult and challenging (具有挑戰的) skills that most of people cannot acquire (學到).

  10. Interior designer (n.): a person whose job is to plan the decoration of the inside of a building

    e.g.
    As people living in modern times (現代) pay more attention to the decoration (裝修) of space (空間), interior designer (室內設計師) are paid better nowadays.
