Theme: Occupations, careers and prospects (p.62)

  1. Hire (v.): to employ someone to do a particular job

    e.g.
    Influenced by the Olympic Winter Games (冬奧會), more and more people have an interest in skiing. Lots of professional (專業的) skiers have been hired (僱用) as coaches at ski resorts (滑雪勝地).

  2. Assistant (n.): someone who helps someone else to do a job

    e.g.
    The boss of the foreign trade (外貿) company requires his assistant (助理) to have terrific (極好的) communication skills, the ability to multitask (同時做多件事) and to cope with (應對) change.

  3. Duty (n.): something that you have to do because it is part of your job

    e.g.
    Although donating (捐款) money to disaster areas (災區) is not a duty (職責) of an actor, many actors make donations to help rebuild (重建) schools.

  4. Director (n.): a manager of an organization

    e.g.
    The directors (董事) are elected (選舉) at the general meeting of shareholders (股東大會). They manage the company in accordance with (依照) the laws and regulations.

  5. Mechanic (n.): someone whose job is repairing the engines of vehicles and other machines

    e.g.
    As automated (自動化的) repair techniques (技術) improve, mechanics (機械工) worry that they risk being laid off (解僱) and that the profession (職業) will die out (逐漸消亡).

  6. On-site (adj.): existing or happening in the place where people are working or involved in a particular activity

    e.g.
    The contestant (參賽者) who aspires (渴望) to be an outstanding (傑出的) host (主持人) made an impromptu (即興的) speech and an on-site (現場的) talent show (才藝表演) that dazzled (使驚歎) both the judges (評委) and the audience.

  7. Insurance (n.): an agreement between you and a company where you pay the company money and if you have an accident, injury, etc., they pay your expenses

    e.g.
    In mainland China, professionals (專業人士) advise that graduates (畢業生) should not only focus on the salary (薪水) when applying for (申請) a job. They should also notice that whether the company offers social insurance (保險) and housing fund (住房公積金).

  8. High-achieving (adj.): dynamic, ambitious, and successful

    e.g.
    The high-achieving (高成就的) real estate (房地產) salesman (男售貨員) was praised and awarded a fat (豐厚的) cash prize at the year-end (年終的) party.

  9. Performance bonus (n.): an incentive paid to motivate employees who achieve the goal set by a company

    e.g.
    Every year, the company awards performance bonuses (業績獎金) to exceptional (卓越的) employees to recognize (認可) their efforts and encourage them to continue working hard.
