Theme: Health and fitness (p.40)

  1. Workout (n.): a period of physical exercise

    e.g.
    Lack of workout (鍛煉) is likely to give rise to (導致) loss of appetite (胃口) and intermittent (間歇的) dizziness (頭暈), making people in a sub-health (亞健康) state (狀態).

  2. Intense (adj.): extreme and forceful

    e.g.
    The teacher suggests that students can take time to do some exercise in the midst of (在……期間) their intense (緊張的) study because it can help recover (恢復) energy.

  3. Peak form (n.): perfect condition

    e.g.
    With the Olympic Games (奧林匹克運動會) approaching (臨近), the coach demands that the athletes step up (增加) their training to maintain their peak form (最佳狀態).

  4. Strength (n.): the ability to do things that demand physical effort

    e.g.
    Doing more aerobic (有氧的) exercise can not only build up (增強) your strength (體力) but also improve your immunity (免疫力), which makes your body more resistant (抵抗的) to illness (疾病).

  5. Stationary bike (n.): a device used as exercise equipment for indoor cycling

    e.g.
    Stationary bikes (健身自行車) in gyms are equipped (裝配) with heart rate monitor (心率監測器) and speed display (速度顯示器), which can help achieve (達到) better fitness (健身) effects (效果).

  6. Stretch (v.): to make your arms and legs straight as long as possible to exercise the joints

    e.g.
    We need to stretch (伸展) for a period of time before doing strenuous (劇烈的) exercise in order to avoid wear (磨損) and tightening (緊繃) of joints (關節).

  7. Severe (adj.): causing very great pain, difficulty, etc.

    e.g.
    Studies have found that blindly (盲目地) pursuing (追求) fitness fads (時尚) can actually put us at risk (危險), causing severe (嚴重的) muscle damage.

  8. Recuperate (v.): to get back your health, strength or energy after being ill, tired, injured, etc.

    e.g.
    The man accidentally (意外地) sprained (扭傷) his ankle (腳踝) while running stairs for exercise and finally recuperated (康復) after three months of treatment (治療).
