Theme: Changes brought by technology (p.37)

  1. Updated (adj.): making something more suitable for use now by adding new information

    e.g.
    The updated (更新的) data in the program (程式) makes the shopping app (應用程式) faster and more powerful (功能強大的).

  2. Information science (n.): the study of collecting, organizing, storing, and using electronic information

    e.g.
    Information science (資訊科學) plays an important role in criminal investigations (刑事偵察), enabling police to track down (追蹤) criminals’ hiding places and survey (勘察) the surrounding areas.

  3. Outdated (adj.): old-fashioned and no longer useful nowadays

    e.g.
    With the advent (出現) of 5G network (網絡), the transmission (傳輸) speed of voice, images (圖像) and videos has been greatly improved. 4G network has become outdated (過時的).

  4. Telegraphy (n.): a communication system sending electric signals through wires or by radio waves

    e.g.
    Before the invention of the telegraphy (電報), it took a long time to receive messages because the messengers (信使) had to travel by the means of transport (交通工具) of those days to deliver (傳遞) letters to the destinations (目的地).

  5. Fast-forward (v.): to move quickly forwards in time, especially to a later point in a story

    e.g.
    Kids may prefer watching YouTube over TV because they can fast-forward (快進) through the boring bits.

  6. Internet revolution (n.): a very important change brought by the internet

    e.g.
    Facts have proved that the changes brought to society by the internet revolution (網絡革命) are noticeable (顯著的). The new business model (商業模式) relying (依靠) on the internet has become the mainstream (主流).

  7. World Wide Web (n.): the system of connected documents on the internet that can be searched for information about a particular subject

    e.g.
    Users can type (輸入) keywords on the World Wide Web (互聯網) to search for various (不同的) content, and links related to the keywords will pop up (彈出).

  8. Innovation (n.): a new idea, design or product

    e.g.
    Innovations (創新) in transportation, such as the high-speed rail (高鐵), have made it easier for people to get around (四處走動), saving commuting (通勤的) time for those who often go on business trips (出差).
