Theme: Changes brought by technology (p.30)

  1. Evolution (n.): a gradual process of change and development

    e.g.
    The evolution (演變) of our communication tools has been dramatic (戲劇性的) in recent decades (十年), from pagers (傳呼機) to smartphones, which greatly facilitate (促進) our exchanges (交流).

  2. Barter (v.): to exchange goods for other things rather than for money

    e.g.
    People in ancient (古代的) times bartered (以物易物) for daily necessities (生活必需品).

  3. Blacksmith (n.): a person who makes things related to iron and horseshoes

    e.g.
    Blacksmiths (鐵匠) are vulnerable (易受傷的) to injury while working. Automation (自動化) can both reduce the risk (風險) of injury and help them do their job efficiently (高效地).

  4. Negotiation (n.): formal discussion between people who are trying to reach an agreement

    e.g.
    From time to time, there are negotiations (洽談) between merchants (商家) and the courier companies (快遞公司) they work with over services rates.

  5. Miniature (adj.): very small

    e.g.
    Detectives (警探) sometimes slip into (潛入) criminal organizations and capture (拍攝) evidence of crimes with miniature (微型的) cameras.

  6. Cash transaction (n.): an act of buying or selling something using money in the form of notes and coins

    e.g.
    With the development (發展) of technology, businessmen (商人) prefer online payment to cash transaction (現金交易) to avoid unnecessary trouble when making a deal (交易).
