Theme: Showbiz (p.10)

  1. Immense (adj.): extremely large in size or degree

    e.g.
    The first Hong Kong’s sci-fi blockbuster (科幻巨製) Warriors of Future uses hologram technology (全像投影技術) to greatly enhance (提升) the realism (真實感) of the images (影像) and give viewers an immense (極大的) sensory (感官的) shock (震撼).

  2. Showbiz (n.): the entertainment business

    e.g.
    Some actors and actresses are so eager to get a place in the showbiz (娛樂圈) and earn huge sums of money that they constantly (不斷) butter up (巴結) famous film producers.

  3. Idol (n.): someone who is admired and respected very much

    e.g.
    The idol (偶像) who just made her debut (首演) has gained much fame (名聲) both at home and abroad (國內外) for her beauty and versatility (多才多藝).

  4. Approval (n.): the feeling of having a positive opinion of someone or something

    e.g.
    In a dance competition, the dancer with breathtaking (令人驚歎的) skills won the judges’ approval (讚賞) for her graceful (柔美的) dancing.

  5. Malicious attack (n.): attacks that are intended to harm people

    e.g.
    In order to make their favourite stars top the hot search list (登上熱搜榜), some fans often launch (發起) malicious attacks (惡意攻擊) on the rivals (競爭對手) of their idols.

  6. Celebrity (n.): someone who is famous, especially in the areas of entertainment

    e.g.
    In order to have a captivating (迷人的) appearance, many celebrities (名人) go to plastic surgery hospitals (整形醫院) to have cosmetic injections (注射) regularly.

  7. In the spotlight (phrase): receiving a lot of public attention

    e.g.
    He is a public figure. He needs to put himself in the spotlight (備受關注的) constantly.

  8. Debut (n.): the first public appearance of a performer or sports player

    e.g.
    After the release of the girl group’s well-received debut (首演), its fanbase (歌迷) keeps growing.

  9. Paparazzi (n.): the photographers who follow famous people around for newspapers and magazines

    e.g.
    Celebrities are plagued (困擾) by the paparazzi (狗仔隊) who hound (追趕) them in a bid to (試圖) get a scoop (獨家新聞) on their private lives.

  10. Public figure (n.): a famous person who is often written about in newspapers and magazines or is often on television or the radio

    e.g.
    Public figures (知名人士) like actors and singers mentioned in the interview that the industry (行業) has strict requirements (要求) on body shape (身形) and they bear (承受) great stress.

  11. Expectation (n.): the strong feeling that something is going to happen

    e.g.
    Despite its limited budget (預算), the action movie (動作片) exceeded (超出) expectations (預期) both in its cast (演員陣容) and special effects (特效).

  12. Break (n.): a short period of time for rest

    e.g.
    To make the shoot (拍攝) more realistic (逼真的), the actor decided to ask firefighters for advice, so he shuttled (往返) between the set (場景) and the fire station. Now he can finally take a break (短暫休息).
