Theme: Personal social responsibility (p.104)

  1. Inmate (n.): a person who is kept in a prison

    e.g.
    The inmate (囚犯) was so remorseful (後悔的) for his previous (先前的) knife robbery (搶劫) that he decided to become a volunteer (義工) after his release (釋放).

  2. Turn over a new leaf (v. phr.): to start behaving in a better way

    e.g.
    The mastermind (幕後策劃者) of the terrorist attacks (恐怖襲擊) spent four decades (十年) in prison poring over (仔細閱讀) the Bible (聖經) and finally made up his mind (決定) to turn over a new leaf (改過自新).

  3. Addiction (n.): the condition of being unable to stop using or doing something as a habit, especially something harmful

    e.g.
    His addiction (癮) to smoking is so serious (嚴重的) that he cannot help (忍不住) taking out a pack of cigarettes (香煙) and taking a few puffs (抽煙) even in non-smoking places.

  4. Reflect on (v. phr.): to think carefully and deeply about something

    e.g.
    For young people who have just entered the workforce (勞動人口), reflecting on (反省) themselves is an indispensable (必不可少的) process to make progress (進步).

  5. Take every opportunity (v. phr.): to use every possible occasion to do or say something

    e.g.
    As a competent (稱職的) environmentalist (環保主義者), he takes every opportunity (抓住每個機會) to publicise (宣傳) the importance of environmental protection (環境保護).

  6. Thankful (adj.): grateful because of something

    e.g.
    The old man is thankful (感激的) to the teenagers (青少年) who found his wallet (錢包) and kindly sent it to the police station (警局).

  7. Redirect someone’s life (v. phr.): to change the direction of someone’s life

    e.g.
    The philanthropist (慈善家) provided suitable (合適的) jobs for hundreds of unemployed (失業的) disabled (殘疾的) people, giving them the opportunity to redirect their lives (重新定向他們的生活).

  8. Responsible (adj.): having good judgment and the ability to act correctly

    e.g.
    That car manufacturer (製造商) is widely welcomed all over the world because it is responsible (有責任感的) about the way it handles its industrial waste (工業廢料).
