Theme: Roles & responsibilities (p.98)

  1. Rewarding (adj.): making you feel happy and satisfied because you feel you are doing something useful or important

    e.g.
    The principal (校長) hoped that the prefects (風紀) found their jobs rewarding (有意義的).

  2. Critical thinking (n. phr.): the process of thinking carefully about a subject or idea

    e.g.
    As sensible (理智的) citizens (公民), we need critical thinking (批判思考) to develop (發展) our own world views (世界觀).

  3. Take a back seat (v. phr.): to accept a less important position than someone or something else

    e.g.
    A responsible (有責任感的) contractor (承辦商) never lets quality take a back seat (居於次要地位) to quantity (數量).

  4. At a loss (prep. phr.): not knowing what to do

    e.g.
    When we lose our passports (護照) in a foreign country and feel at a loss (不知所措), we can turn to (求助於) the Chinese consulate (領事館) there.

  5. Monitor (n.): a student who has been chosen to help teachers in class

    e.g.
    Our monitor (班長) is warm-hearted (熱心的). He always reaches out to (幫助) us when we are in trouble (在困難中).
