Theme: Sports (p.91)

  1. Extreme sport (n. phr.): a sport that is extremely exciting and often dangerous

    e.g.
    More and more young people are taking up extreme sports (極限運動) like parkour (飛躍道) and skateboarding (滑板運動).

  2. Fitness (n.): the condition of being physically strong and healthy

    e.g.
    Athletes (運動員) usually have regular (定期的) physical (身體的) check-ups to ensure (確保) their fitness (健康).

  3. Risk (n.): the possibility of something bad happening

    e.g.
    It is a risk (風險) skating without any protective (防護的) gear (裝備) such as a helmet (頭盔) and knee pads (護膝).

  4. Participant (n.): a person who is taking part in an activity or event

    e.g.
    The Inter-School Athletics Competition (校際田徑比賽) this year has the largest number of participants (參加者) ever.

  5. Practise (v.): to do an activity regularly so that you can improve your skill

    e.g.
    The backup (後補隊員) practised (練習) shooting (投籃) day and night in order to become a starter (正選隊員).

  6. Beginner (n.): someone who has just started learning something

    e.g.
    Biathlon (冬季兩項) combines (結合) skiing and shooting (射擊). It is challenging (具挑戰性的) for beginners (初學者).

  7. Instructor (n.): someone who teaches a sport or practical skill

    e.g.
    The instructor (教練) of a football team needs to know the strengths (優點) and weaknesses (缺點) of all of his or her players.
