Theme: Sports (p.84)

  1. The World Cup (n. phr.): a competition between national teams from all over the world, usually held every few years

    e.g.
    The young footballer amazed (使驚歎) the world with his brilliant (出色的) shooting (射門) skills at the World Cup (世界杯).

  2. Learn someone’s lesson (v. phr.): to suffer a bad experience and know not to do it again

    e.g.
    After that bad serve (發球), the tennis player learned her lesson (吸取教訓) and adjusted (調整) her stance (姿勢).

  3. Weakness (n.): a particular part or quality of someone that is not good

    e.g.
    In the boxing ring (拳擊台), Ben found his opponent’s (對手) weakness (弱點), so he kept punching (用拳猛擊) his opponent's awkward (笨拙的) right hand.

  4. Overcome (v.): to succeed in dealing with something

    e.g.
    He finally overcame (克服) his childhood trauma (童年陰影) of drowning (溺水) and decided (決定) to learn to swim.

  5. Coach (n.): someone who trains a person in a sport

    e.g.
    After his failure (失敗) in the last golf tournament (錦標賽), his coach (教練) reformulated (重新規劃) his training schedule.

  6. Experienced (adj.): having skill or knowledge because you have done something many times

    e.g.
    Our school will hire (僱用) a more experienced (經驗豐富的) coach for the basketball team.

  7. Technique (n.): a way of doing an activity that needs skill

    e.g.
    The PE teacher is explaining (講解) some breathing (呼吸) techniques (技巧) for long-distance running (長跑) to his students.

  8. Intense (adj.): extreme or very strong

    e.g.
    The table tennis players will undergo (經受) intense (高強度的) training in order to be fully (充分地) prepared for the Olympic Games (奧運會).

  9. Muscle (n.): one of many tissues in the body that can tighten and relax to produce movement

    e.g.
    The weightlifter (舉重運動員) always lifts (舉起) dumbbells (啞鈴) so he has built a lot of muscles (肌肉).

  10. Recover (v.): to become well again

    e.g.
    The fencer (劍擊運動員) was recovering (康復) from an operation (手術) on his elbow (手肘).

  11. Friendly match (n. phr.): a game of a sport that is not part of an important competition

    e.g.
    In order to promote (增進) the friendship between schools, our school rugby (欖球) team will hold an inter-school friendly match (友誼賽) in the district.

  12. Physically (adv.): in a way that relates to the body

    e.g.
    Hurdling (跨欄) without doing warm-up exercises (熱身運動) is likely to make you feel physically (身體上) sick. For example, you may suffer (受苦) from cramps (抽筋) or dizziness (眩暈).

  13. Mentally (adv.): related to the mind

    e.g.
    Before a major (重大的) competition (比賽), athletes (運動員) often need to prepare themselves not only physically but also mentally (心理上).
