Theme: Leisure and entertainment (p.37)

  1. Tranquil (adj.): calm, quiet and peaceful

    e.g.
    More and more city dwellers (居民) are yearning (渴望) for living in a tranquil (寧靜的) place in the countryside to get away from (遠離) stress (壓力).

  2. Calming (adj.): making someone become quiet and more relaxed

    e.g.
    Only several households (家庭) live on this isolated (偏遠的) island and they live a simple life. A calming (平靜的) atmosphere (氛圍) pervades (滲透) the whole island.

  3. Destination (n.): the place where someone is going

    e.g.
    Wealth (財富) is not the destination (目的地) of my life. I aim to live a successful (成功) life and build positive (正面的) relationships (關係) with others.

  4. Immerse (v.): to put someone or something completely under the surface of a liquid

    e.g.
    Many visitors to the Dead Sea (死海) try mud baths (泥漿浴) because it is said that immersing (沉浸) ourselves in the mineral-rich (有豐富礦物質的) mud can prevent disease (疾病).

  5. Hot spring (n. phr.): a place where hot mineral water comes up from the ground

    e.g.
    Knowing that eggs could be boiled (煮熟) at high temperatures (溫度), the little boy put a basket of eggs into the hot spring (溫泉) to see what would happen.

  6. Stroll (v.): to walk in a slow, relaxed way

    e.g.
    People who live near the sea like to stroll (散步) along the waterfront (海濱) and enjoy the sound of the breeze (微風) and waves (海浪) after dinner.

  7. Intriguing (adj.): very interesting because of being unusual

    e.g.
    When you find something intriguing (引人入勝的), be persistent (堅持不懈的) and dig into (鑽研) it. It might become your hobby someday (有朝一日).

  8. Souvenir (n.): something you buy or keep to remind yourself of a place or an event

    e.g.
    Many people think that packing suitcases (行李箱) and picking (挑選) souvenirs (紀念品) are integral (不可或缺的) parts of an enjoyable trip.

  9. Landscape (n.): a view of the countryside

    e.g.
    The tourists watching the sunrise (日出) in the Arabian desert (阿拉伯沙漠) were amazed (驚歎) by the landscape (風景) there.
