Theme: Health and fitness (p.20)

  1. Strengthen (v.): to make something become more powerful

    e.g.
    Sports such as discus throw (擲鐵餅) and weightlifting (舉重) are effective (有效的) ways to strengthen (加強) our muscles.

  2. Immune system (n. phr.): the system in your body that protects you from disease

    e.g.
    With age, the immune systems (免疫系統) is likely to become less sensitive (靈敏的).

  3. Aerobics (n.): very active physical exercises that increase the amount of oxygen in blood, often done to music with a group of people

    e.g.
    Brisk (快步的) walking, jogging (慢跑) and Tai Chi (太極拳) are all common aerobics (有氧運動) in our daily lives.

  4. Multigrain (n.): containing several types of grain

    e.g.
    Eating more multigrain (雜糧的) foods can aid (幫助) in digestion (消化).

  5. Veggie burger (n. phr.): a burger made with vegetables, like beans, instead of meat

    e.g.
    The veggie burger (素食漢堡) looks just as tempting (誘人的) as a regular (一般的) burger, but it contains far fewer calories (卡路里) than those with meat.

  6. Sugary drink (n. phr.): a drinkable liquid with added sugar

    e.g.
    Consuming (攝入) too much sugary drinks (含糖飲料) is said to cause high blood pressure and diabetes (糖尿病).

  7. High-fibre (adj.): Containing a lot of a substance that helps move foods quickly through your body

    e.g.
    Eating high-fibre (高纖維的) foods can make us healthier as they reduce chronic (慢性) inflammation (炎症).

  8. Starchy food (n. phr.): food that contains a substance that is found in potatoes, rice etc and provides you with energy

    e.g.
    Rice is a typical (典型的) starchy food (含澱粉的食物). Because of the starch in rice, we often feel a bit sweet when we eat it.
