Theme: Nature and animals (p.179)

  1. Desert (n.): a large area covered with sand or rocks and with very little water

    e.g.
    Camels' (駱駝) ability to endure (忍耐) hunger and thirst make them well suited (適應) for living in the desert (沙漠).

  2. Barren (adj.): unable to produce plants or fruit

    e.g.
    With the help of technology, the Swiss (瑞士的) professor (教授) has succeeded in growing lush (茂密的) trees in the barren (貧瘠的) land.

  3. Shelter (n.): a protection from bad weather or danger

    e.g.
    Because of the lack of shelter (遮蔽處) on the plains (平原), some large animals, like elephants and bulls, usually avoid (避免) moving in order to reduce (減少) heat (熱量) loss (流失).

  4. Protected area (n. phr.): an area that protects animals and plants from human destruction

    e.g.
    In order to maintain (維持) biodiversity (生物多樣性), our country has set up (設立) many protected areas (保護區) for endangered (瀕危的) wild (野生的) animals.

  5. Wildlife (n.): animals and plants that grow in natural conditions

    e.g.
    We condemn (譴責) poachers (偷獵者) because poaching (偷獵) goes against (違背) the purpose of protecting wildlife (野生生物).

  6. Safari (n.): a journey to observe or hunt wild animals

    e.g.
    The young couple (夫婦) got a close look at flamingos (紅鸛) and zebras (斑馬) during their safari (觀察野生動物之行) in East Africa.

  7. Habitat (n.): the natural environment in which an animal or plant lives

    e.g.
    Amazon rainforest (雨林) is a natural habitat (棲息地) for different sorts (種類) of creatures (生物).

  8. Eagle owl (n. phr.): a kind of large owl

    e.g.
    Eagle owls (雕鴞) generally (普遍) live far away from people. They hide in dense forests (密林) during the day (日間) to roost (棲息) and are out at night to hunt.

  9. Creature (n.): any living thing that can move independently

    e.g.
    The blue whale (藍鯨) is currently (目前) the largest living creature (生物) on earth, but its limited population is worrying (令人擔憂的).

  10. Horn (n.): a hard, pointed part that grows from some animals’ head

    e.g.
    Cattle (牛) use horns (角) to attack enemies (敵人) and defend (防禦) themselves.

  11. Oryx (n.): a large antelope with long, straight horns

    e.g.
    Although oryxes (巨羚) are larger than antelopes (羚羊), they are gentle (溫順) and timid (膽小).

  12. Extinction (n.): a situation in which something no longer exists

    e.g.
    In order to avoid the extinction (滅絕) of pandas (熊貓), people have adopted (採取) the method of breeding (飼養) pandas in captivity (圈養).
